The End
Final Blog thank god! Cm 1145 has been a great experience, I have gained a lot of knowledge about writing, knowledge that I will take with me through out the rest of my school years and where ever else the years take me. I can honestly say i enjoyed my english class it was a challenge and if i make it all the way through I will defiantly feel a sense of accomplishment. I really enjoyed having Kerri Cull as my teacher , she is very organized, helpful and if you were ever having trouble with anything she was always more then happy to help. Kerri and the rest of my classmates made cm 1145 easy to get through so thank you guys for everything and I hope everyone has a great summer and ends up where they want to be in september!
Now that my blog assignment is almost done i only have one more essay and a research paper due for cm 1145... another research paper for sociology and a math assignment! I guess I have my work cut out for me for the weekend, I will be a prisoner in my own room. There is no more time to procrastinate it is time to get thing done. Final exams are just around the corner and i can feel the stress of studying creeping up on me already!! Stress is probably one of the worst feelings in the world but once it is relieved there is no better feeling. This has been a good semester and I'm not complaining but i can not wait for school to be over with!
Purpose & Audience
It is always important to know who your audience is when when writing any kind of piece. The first question you should ask yourself is " who are my readers" this will determine how you will choose to appeal to the reader. How can i best get them to be interested. Make sure the reader will understand what you are trying to explain and make it appealing. We were given random topics in class and we had to made them appeal the a random audience that we were also given. My audience was an eighty year old african woman and i had to make a Big Mac appeal to her! The first think I would do is convince her that Big Macs are one of the worlds most famous burgers and its defiantly something you have to try before you die, considering she is eighty years old. Also trying a big mac is trying food from another culture she could see how people from other cultures eat. The purpose would be to make a big make as appealing as possible to an eighty year old african woman that can be a challenge.
Coming to an end
I honestly can't believe this year is almost over already, I think the years start to go by faster as we get older. It has defiantly been a year filled with new experiences, i went to a new school with new teachers and friends. Now thats the end is quickly arriving I guess its time to make even more new decisions. I chose to go to school here at home this year because I can't even stand the thought of leaving home, its probably my biggest fear. I figured since I stayed here and extra year by the end of it I would defiantly be ready to leave, but here I am more terrified then ever. The thought of having to live on my own seriously gives me anxiety! If I could live home for the rest of my life I think I would. There is no reason for me to leave I have everything I ever wanted right here. I have my friends, family my own car, my own room, food and a roof over my head free of charge... life is just too good at home. So in september my life will make a complete 360, I will have no family surrounding me everyday, no car and probably no food. Im sure I'm thinking of the worst possible situation but i find it hard to see the bright side. Hopefully everything turn out better then i expect , if not I have a feeling that next year won't be going by as quickly as this year.
Rat dissection!
Last week in biology I learned something knew about myself, i learned that i love to direct things. At first i was a little skeptical about cutting open a rat but once I got going there was no stopping me. Some people may feel guilty about dissecting a poor innocent animal and I guess the thought of guilt passed through my mind for a moment but then it was gone again. I love the challenge of having to cut something so delicately , one wrong or aggressive move and you could damage something important. Dissection is almost like an art, you have all your different tools thats you use to create a master piece. The goal of this direction was to completely open up the rat and locate all of its inner organs and their functions. Its amazing that everything found inside the rat can be found in our own bodies. The way i think of it is the rat was already dead to begin with so by dissecting it you are actually making use of the of the animal instead of it going to waste. If we didn't use rat dissection for scientific research we wouldn't have made all the scientific discoveries that have helped and saved man kind.
Blog assignment
The blog assignment is defiantly a creative assignment and it might be a little easier if i were creative. So we had around three or more month to write fourteen blog entries and of corse due to my sever procrastination i am trying to get all my blogs done the last day! It would be so much easier if we could blog about things other than cm 1145. Last term I found blogging a lot easier because there were so many different topics to blog about, there was a new story or poem for every blog. This term i feel limited on what to blog about. There are only so many times you can blog about emotional appeals. On the other hand I have learned to like the idea of blogging. Its a chance to express your own thoughts and opinions on whats going on in your life or in this case in your english class. There are no right or wrong answers when blogging only right or wrong punctuation. Making a blog can also help people deal with stress. After a long day were nothing seems to be join your way , you can relax and and release all your feeling in blog form! Blogging also keeps you in touch with other class mates you can view and comment on their blog and find out how they feel about the course. On my own i don;t think i would have ever decided to start a blog but I am glad i got to experience what its like to be a blogger through both of my english courses this year.
Logical arguments
Logical arguments are another one of many arguments we have learned about this term. These arguments are backed up with hard evidence. If you can prove your point with evidence there is a good chance you will win the argument. Logical arguments hold evidence such as facts, stats, testing, reasoning and common sense. The first step to a logical argument would be to evidently choose an argument and then decide witch point of view you would like to defend. Be sure to research your topic, make sure that you are able to provide hard evidence to back up each claim that you make. If you are ever in a situation where you want to prove your point you can never go wrong with using a logical appeal.
Clever Emotional Appeals
I know I have already written a blog about emotional appeals but I feel as though I need to write another one. Emotion appeals have been discused quite frequently through out this course. In class we were given a list of company slogas and we then had to figure out how these slogans related to people and what types of people and what made them so appealing to the public. Here are a couple of the slogans we were given... "Just do it" -Nike and "have it your way" -Burger King. These may seem like simple short sentences but there is so much more to it then meets the eye. When we think of the brand name nike the first thing that comes to mind is sports equipment and athletic clothing, so what better way to appeal to an athlete better then " Just do it." These words of inspiration motivates athletes to push themselves further. To " just do it " means to set a goal for yourself and acomplish it with no excuses, to put everything out of your mind and focus souly on what you want. Its amazing how so many emotions can be evoked by three simple words, but thats the power of an emotional appeal! Another example would be "have it your way" by Burger King. The average person probably see's this advertisement one hundred times a day not realizing that it is infact an emotional appeal. What better way to attract costumers then telling them that they are in controle, " have it your way" implies that a constumer will get exactly what they ask for, this also promotes good customer service. When a customer knows they are considered top priority this gives them a great sense of joy and an overal good vive about the restaurant. If a restaurants can acheive a possitive emotional appeal they are most likely to have a succesful business. having a clever emotional appeal can make all the difference in the world to companies and advertising buisiness, having a good amotional appeals is like having money in the bank!

Immigrants..
The poem "Immigrants" was a very well written poem by Pat Mora. This poem brings attention to american immigrants who are replacing their traditional culture with traditional North American culture. "Wrap their babies in the American flag, feed them mashed hot dogs and apple pie." These immigrants want to live the american dream and fit in with the more common culture, when immigrants devote all their time to trying to embrace american culture they rarely find time to teach their traditional culture to their children, as a result their culture gets left behinds and is not passed on to the next generation causing that particular culture to die within that particular family. " Will they like our boy, our girl, our fine american boy, our fine american girl?" Many immigrants betray their own culture in hopes to fit in with society hoping the will feel more accepted.
Procrastination!
Procrastination is one of my biggest struggles, I wasn't always cursed with this dreadful trait it seems i have developed it over the years. In the world of psychology procrastination refers to the act of replacing high priority actions with tasks of low priority. In other words putting things that you want to do before the things that are important and need to be done. Procrastination may seem like an easy thing to fix but i assure you it is not! Its almost like a disease that gets worse and worse over time. Its starts off by putting things off for an hour or two then a day or two, eventually you will be putting things off and avoiding important tasks for weeks! Our bodies do not prefer negative emotions and we do not deal with stress all that well so putting off a stressful task for a later date can actually be enjoyable. Its is so much easier to tell yourself you will get to that later or i'll do that tomorrow. There is always a nagging voice in my head telling me what needs to be done but I always some how convince that voice that things can be done later. Thinking about doing things later brings me great sense of relief and peace of mind... but "later " comes a lot sooner then you think. Once the later date becomes the latest possible date, thats when stress hits its highest peak. Sometime this sudden rush of stress can actually motivate you to get things done and some people much like myself find themselves working better under pressure. When I know I have a week to fulfil a task my mind thinks I have all the time in the world so I am in no rush to get anything done. Here are some tips to help one overcome the horrible curse of procrastination: prioritize the tasks that cause you to procrastinate, stop giving yourself excuses to procrastinate, organize thoughts and actions and keep them on track, make yourself a schedule or check list and and make sure you follow through. Procrastination is a serious issue the best thing to do is nip it in the bud as soon as possible because procrastination surly doesn't procrastinate!
Why we crave horror movies!
"Why we crave horror movies " is the title of an essay that i read in our practical guide to writing book and i couldn't agree more with the first sentence " I think we're all mentally ill; those of us outside the asylums only hide it a little better- and maybe not all that better, after all" Horror movies are one of my all time favourite things in life. There is nothing better then feeling your heart racing and palms sweating all because of a movie! Im this essay the writer compares a horror movie to a roller coaster which makes sense. Some people feel the same mixed emotions on a roller coaster as they do while watching a scary movie. Some people can confuse the feeling of fear and excitement, for me being scared is exciting I personally love not knowing what is to come and I get a sudden rush of excitement when my body is frozen with fear. I know people who feel the complete opposite when it come to horror movies they will try to avoid them at all coast. Fear isn't always a feeling people enjoy, in fact most people hate to feel scared because it also makes them feel vulnerable. When I watch a scary movie my fear ends when the movie ends, the fear doesn't follow me to bed at night, witch may be why I am pro horror movies. Those who fear horror films usually reframe form watching them because their fear follows them and they may not easy for them to forget about what they have seen or experience while watching the movie. There are so many scary movies to choose from there can me movies about ghost and paranormal activity, fictional monsters, and my favourite would have to be movies about cereal killers and murderers. The more real a movie seems to be the scarier it is!!!
Soo many essays!!
By the end of cm 1145 I should be a pro at writing essay's. I chose this course because I knew it would be a challenge and I was defiantly right, I also chose this course because I knew it would benefit me in the long run and Im positive it will. We are near the end and it feels like we have written more essays then I can count, but i can honestly say it hasn't been as bad as i thought! We have always been given the choice to choose what we would like to write about witch can be bitter sweet... for me at least. In my opinion the hardest part about writing an essay is picking a topic! If i were assigned a topic i would know exactly were to begin and what to research , when i have to pic a topic of my own I could be sitting in the same spot for hours just wondering what to write about. Then after about a week of wondering i finally find a topic ! Then i'm faced with the challenge of actually starting the essay. There are so many ways to start and essay and what you choose is crucial, it can either make or break the entire piece. So after writing and rewriting the introduction about a dozen times it is now time to move on to the body which is probable the easiest part because you should already know what you are going to talk about. Then finally the conclusion which is just about as difficult if not more difficult the the introduction. The conclusion has to tie the entire essay together making sure that everything you said makes sense. Writing essays for this corse hasn't been easy but defiantly has been a good learning experience and although it was stressful and I now probably have a few grey hairs choosing cm 1145 was defiantly the right choice .

to lie or not to lie! that is the question!!
Last week in cm 1145 we were given the task to choose from a handful of essays in our book and answer questions about the essay. It wasn't even half as dreadful as I thought it would be because for once a couple of the essays were actually interesting! One essay in particular really made me think, its a question that has pondered my time many time before, I could spend hours trying to come up with an answer to the question " to lie or not to lie?" Ever since we were born we have been taught to always tell the truth no matter what and that lying is bad, you should NEVER lie. Is there any exception to these rules??
This essay in titled " To lie or not to lie" talk about the life changing decision thats have to me made by doctors and the dilemma they face when it comes to telling a patient the truth about there conditions, possibly leaving them in depressed, disappointed or lying to protect them from the truth. There is two ways to view this situation, what confuses me is that i understand and can relate to both sides with makes it difficult to choose what side i'm on.
Doctors who choose to lie to their patients about there health believe that the seriously ill do not want to know the truth about their condition. Some believe that informing them of the devastating truth can destroy their hopes and possibly recover more slowly or deteriorate faster. Suicide is also possibility for patients who are waiting to die. When looking at it from this point of view I'm sure most people would agree with doctors. If protecting someone from the truth could better their health and keep their hopes up then in this case lying could be the best policy.
On the other hand other people believe that sick patient especially dying patients deserve to know the everything about their own well being. If someone only had a few months to live I'm sure they would like to do everything they ever wanted to do in their life within this few months. They get to decide how they end their life and maybe get a chance to say goodbye to the people they love. When a doctor lies to a patient it can also damage the doctors reputation.
Although I understand both point of views I think I'm join to have to listen to what my parents have taught me , honesty is the best policy. Everyone should have the right to know the full extent of their conditions. It is not up to a doctor to decide what you should or shouldn't know . If i were the one who was ill I would want to know everything about my condition wether it be good or bad. It isn't fun to be lied to especially when it come to your well being or ever more important... your life.

bogging for cm 1145
One major topic discussed in cm 1145 this term is defiantly arguments and appeals! It turns out I actually like writing about emotional appeals. Emotional appeals are very commonly used, it is a type of writing used to trigger some kind of emotion wether it is sadness, happiness or humour. When an emotional appeal is used it makes a subject a lot more interesting and appealing to readers. An emotional appeal can also be effective in commercials, for example smoking commercials. Im sure everyone feels an eery sense of sadness and disturbance when watching a smoking commercial. This is no coincidence these commercials are made purposely to appeal to your emotions. I feel that emotional appeals have more of an impact on a person and sometimes if reading or watching something where emotions are involved then the person is more likely to remember what it was that they watched or are reading !
